PEEK (polyether ether ketone) is one of the highest-performance engineering plastics, and we machine it regularly for medical, semiconductor, and oil & gas clients. Here’s what you need to know about PEEK CNC machining.
## Why PEEK?
PEEK offers a unique combination of properties:
– **Temperature resistance**: Continuous use up to 260°C
– **Chemical resistance**: Resistant to most solvents, acids, and fuels
– **Mechanical strength**: Higher than many metals, with excellent fatigue resistance
– **Biocompatibility**: ISO 10993 certified — safe for medical implants
– **Electrical insulation**: Excellent dielectric properties
## Common PEEK Applications
– Medical surgical instruments and implant components
– Semiconductor wafer handling and test sockets
– Oil & gas downhole seals and valve seats
– Aerospace lightweight structural parts
– Electronic insulators and connectors
## PEEK Machining Challenges
PEEK is not as easy to machine as aluminum. Key considerations:
1. **Thermal expansion**: PEEK expands 5-6x more than aluminum with temperature changes. For tight-tolerance parts, we machine in a temperature-controlled environment and allow for stress relieving.
2. **Chip evacuation**: PEEK chips can string and clog tools. Sharp tools and high spindle speeds are essential.
3. **Material cost**: PEEK bar stock is 10-20x more expensive than aluminum. Nesting parts efficiently and minimizing scrap is critical.
## Our PEEK Capabilities
We machine unfilled PEEK, carbon-filled PEEK, glass-filled PEEK, and bearing-grade PEEK (with PTFE or carbon). Tolerances down to ±0.01 mm are achievable with proper fixturing.
